You might have seen some Tik Tok videos of a Tom cruise clone going viral, and recently there was a deep fake video created of Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna, while technology is touching new highs, humanity is making new lows. It’s very scary what’s happening with usage of deep fakes right now.
While advancement of technology is making lot of lives, tasks better, if not handled properly will have the potential to destroy the whole humanity. A risk and safety measures should be created and adopted by every company and country. The dangers of AI cannot be ignored any more and should be addressed right now!!!!
So, how can people misuse deepfakes?
Misinformation and Propaganda: Creating fabricated videos of political figures or celebrities saying or doing things they never did, which could be used to spread misinformation, influence elections, or stir public sentiment.
Impersonation: Deepfake technology enables the creation of highly realistic and convincing video or audio recordings, making it possible to impersonate individuals without their consent. This can be used to fabricate evidence, manipulate personal relationships, or impersonate public figures for fraudulent purposes.
Security Breaches: Bypassing biometric security measures that use facial or voice recognition by creating false positives, allowing unauthorized access to secure systems.
Legal Deception: Presenting fake video or audio evidence in legal proceedings, which could lead to wrongful convictions or the false exoneration of guilty parties.
And many more…Imagine the catastrophic damage deepfakes can do, it can literally be used as a weapon to create a digital world war!
How can we stop it and keep checks on deepfakes?
Platform Responsibility: Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube should have systems to monitor and flag deepfakes as soon as a video is uploaded. It’s all about catching the fakes early on.
Content Authentication Tools: It would be great if there was a way to check whether content is AI-generated — kind of like the checks some writing platforms do. Imagine having this for all videos and texts on social platforms. Social media companies could embed these tools to keep things authentic.
Legal Measures: We need to make and enforce strict laws that target the making and spreading of deepfakes, with clear penalties for misuse. It’s about keeping it legal and legit.
No Impersonation Zone: Impersonating someone with a deepfake should be a clear no-go on all platforms. There should be straightforward rules against it, with a zero-tolerance policy leading to a ban if broken.
Global Team-Up: Since deepfakes don’t stop at borders, countries worldwide should join forces and stick to a common set of AI safety rules. It’s like a global playbook everyone needs to follow.
The world is moving towards a very dangerous zone, if this is not addressed very soon then we will be living in a mirage not knowing the difference between reality and fake thereby losing trust on people. We will be a society with no trust and lies!
Recently, UK has conducted a “AI Safety Summit” and many countries from the world participated in it. We still need a lot of research and policies governing AI tools and still long way to go, but I hope countries and collectively as a society we move in right direction.
